Library Student Worker

Reports To: Casey Koss(ckoss1@sienaheights.edu), Reference and Public Services Librarian

Position Summary:

The Library Student Worker plays a vital role in providing excellent customer service and ensuring the smooth operation of the library. This position requires a proactive, detail-oriented, and friendly individual who can assist patrons, maintain a welcoming environment, and support library staff with a variety of tasks. As the library continues to reimagine its space and services, Student Workers will also be expected to contribute to the ongoing improvements of the library environment. This role offers valuable experience in library services, customer service, teamwork, and contributing to the evolution of a dynamic learning space.

Student Workers are expected to maintain a consistent work schedule throughout the academic semester with minimal interruptions, and unexcused absences are not acceptable.

Appropriate workplace attire is mandatory.

Responsibilities:

  • Patron Services:
    • Warmly greet patrons and provide initial assistance upon their arrival.
    • Direct patrons to appropriate library resources, services, and staff based on their information needs.
    • Provide basic troubleshooting assistance for public computers, including the Microsoft Office Suite and printing.
    • Staff the library service desk independently, answering questions and providing assistance according to established procedures.
  • Information Assistance:
    • Assist patrons with locating materials within the library.
    • Retrieve books and other materials as requested by patrons or library staff.
  • Library Maintenance and Organization:
    • Conduct routine rounds of the library to ensure a tidy and organized environment.
    • Perform head counts as required.
    • Maintain cleanliness by pushing in chairs, picking up trash, and wiping down tables and chairs.
    • Accurately shelve books and other materials according to library classification systems.
  • Program and Event Support:
    • Assist library staff in the creation and setup of engaging library displays.
    • Support the creation and implementation of library events and programs, which may include setup, registration, and participant guidance.
  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning of the library.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student in good standing at Siena Heights University.
  • Must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to library policies and procedures.
  • Reliability and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a customer service or library setting is a plus.
