The Dances

The Shuffle Along

Emerged in 1921, led to popularization of Jazz dance which was a combination of European and African body movements with lots of tap dancing.

The Charleston

Based on the African American musical style and beat. Became incredibly popular after being featured in the Broadway show Runnin’ Wild in 1923. 

The Lindy Hop

Originated in Harlem, NY. Combined moves from tap and the Charleston. Named for the pilot Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight. First dance to include swinging partner up into the air.
